Dax runs from your menu bar and stays out of the way until you press a shortcut. This guide walks you through everything from download to your first result.

What you need

  • A Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later
  • Apple Silicon or Intel (both work)

Step 1: Download and install

Download Dax

Head to getdax.app/download. The installer starts downloading automatically.

Run the installer

Open the downloaded .pkg file and follow the prompts. Dax lands in your Applications folder.

Open Dax

Launch Dax from Applications. You’ll see a small icon appear in your menu bar at the top of the screen. That’s home base.
If macOS asks “Are you sure you want to open this?”, click Open. Dax is signed and notarized by Apple.

Step 2: Set up your account

The first time you open Dax, a setup screen walks you through creating an account:

Sign up for a Dax account

Enter your name and email. We’ll send you a code; type it in and your account activates instantly. Start on the Free plan and upgrade to Pro any time.
Already have a code? Tap “Already have a code?” on the setup screen and enter it directly.

Step 3: Try your first tool

Let’s turn an image into a shareable link with Image to URL.

Copy an image

Take a screenshot (⌘⇧4) or copy any image to your clipboard.

Press the shortcut

Press ⌃ ⌥ U from anywhere. That’s Control + Option + U.

Get the link

Dax uploads the image and copies a shareable URL to your clipboard. Paste it wherever you need it: a chat, a pull request, a document.
Not sure about shortcuts? Press ⌃ ⌥ Space (Control + Option + Space) to open the launcher grid where every tool is one click away. You can also click the Dax icon in your menu bar.

Ask AI a quick question

Press ⌃⌥K. A floating prompt box appears. Type a question and get an answer in seconds.

Pull text from an image

Press ⌃⌥R. Dax reads any text in a screenshot or photo and copies it to your clipboard. Works offline.

What’s a shortcut? It’s a key combination you press to instantly open a tool. In Dax, most shortcuts are Control + Option + a letter. You hold Control and Option together, then tap the letter. For example, ⌃⌥K means hold Control + Option, then press K.
